MOMENTUM BUILDS BEHIND RAILWAY RE-OPENINGS

Private sector recognises the opportunity for attractive and environmentally-friendly transport based on lightweight rail technology

A massive new boost to the prospects for re-opening railway branch lines has come from the recent launch of Kilbride Community Rail, a new organisation aimed at creating new rail links using land development funding.  Meanwhile, the Conservative Party and Transport 2000 have begun to call for the safeguarding of disused railways for future services.  A number of the local rail links proposed for re-introduction - such as Alnwick-Alnmouth in the North East and Frankley-Longbridge in the West Midlands - are ideally suited to 'lightweight rail' operation as being developed by Parry People Movers Ltd (PPML), rather than conventional 'heavy rail' which is best suited to very high passenger flows.

West Midlands-based PPML, which is developing and commercialising a new family of rail vehicles, strongly welcomes the growing interest in re-opening old railway lines to meet today's travel needs.  The firm's lightweight rail concepts - already proven in public service - are widely seen as an ideal means of providing new 'feeder' services on short-distance branch lines, and have been the focus of increasing attention from the transport industry and politicians.  Tom Harris MP, the Minister for Rail, and shadow secretary of state for transport Chris Grayling MP have both visited the company to experience PPML technology for themselves.

PPML offers a range of railcars and trams that are modern and attractive to passengers, highly efficient in operation and significantly more affordable than equivalent modes of transport.  An experimental service on Network Rail's Stourbridge Town branch during 2005-06 saw more than 4,000 journeys in public operation with 99% punctuality and reliability and (compared to conventional trains) calculated reductions of 45% in operating costs and 80% in carbon dioxide emissions.

Following last year's trial, the West Midlands Passenger Transport Authority has called for PPML railcars to be used permanently on the Stourbridge Town branch.  Reacting to market interest, PPML has recently raised new funds including an agreement with Manufacturing Advisory Service West Midlands for assistance with design work on the next generation of lightweight railcars.

"Rail-based public transport is likely to be the major factor in reducing the overall carbon footprint of travel, but in order for people to use it they have to be able to access it easily," said PPML's chairman John Parry.  "Re-opening branch lines will bring high-quality public transport right into communities, so you'll be able to walk to the new rail service instead of having to use the car even if you're intending to take the train from the nearest station.  However, people don't want a noisy, disruptive main line railway in their back yards.  Parry People Movers vehicles are clean, green and quiet - like modern trams - and are ideally suited to providing quick and convenient local links to longer-distance main line trains."

NOTES FOR EDITORS:

Parry People Movers Ltd information

COMPANY:  Parry People Movers Ltd (PPML) was founded in 1992 to develop rail transport based on a new innovation: the "Kinergetic" flywheel energy store, which allows vehicles to run extremely efficiently and to recapture their braking energy for reuse when accelerating.  The company is owned by approximately 200 shareholders and is quoted on the PLUS market.

ADVANTAGES:  PPML's rail vehicles offer the quality of modern light rail transport without the need for electrical power supply, giving excellent environmental performance and energy efficiency at lower cost than conventional technology. The same technology can be used on railways or urban tramways.  PPML's vehicles are fully compliant with accessibility regulations.

ACHIEVEMENTS:  Twelve PPML vehicles have been built, ranging in capacity from 2 to 50 passengers.  Between them they have carried over 100,000 passengers.  Previous vehicles have operated in Bristol, Brighton, Barking, Swansea, Birmingham, Oswestry and elsewhere.  PPM 50 Light Railcar No. 999 900 has run on the Chasewater Railway, the Great Central Railway, the Severn Valley Railway and the Wensleydale Railway since it was built in 2001.  From 11th December 2005 to 17th December 2006, this railcar operated passenger service between Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town stations on Sundays, run by licensed train operator Pre Metro Operations Ltd.

TECHNOLOGY:  The "Kinergetic" technology used in PPML's vehicles is licensed to the company by JPM Parry & Associates Ltd, a West Midlands engineering company specialising in overseas development, integrated transport, and energy/environmental issues.
